British breeders form EBBA

Continental charmer: EBBA members will hope to foster contact across Europe to encourage breeders of species such as the great titA  group of British birdkeepers, including the recently prosecuted birdkeeper Ted Easter, are forming a new association for keepers of European bird species. They have called it the European Bird Breeders Association (EBBA).

The idea came from discussions between Mr Easter and Chris Newman of the International Herpetological Society (IHS). The core group of aviculturalists involved are former members of the now-defunct Association for the Study and Propagation of European Birds.

Mr Easter said: “The new association’s aims include encouraging the breeding in captivity of European birds of all species and making representations to DEFRA and other parties such as Natural England, on behalf of keepers of European species. There will be breeding loans, studbooks, regular meetings, a quarterly publication, trips to European shows, with the overall aim to foster European birdkeeping in Britain and forge links with keepers throughout Europe.”

Mr Easter continued: “Membership is open to all birdkeepers in the UK. The EBBA will affiliate to the Sustainable Users Network, to enable members’ voices to be heard at Government level, and to the IOA-COM. We will also affiliate to the Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS), so members can benefit from access to legal expenses insurance of up to £100,000.”

The first meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, July 31, at Priors Pets, Cottage Nursery, Howards Lane, Cardinals Green, near Horse Heath, Cambs CN21 4QX.
