Colombia's Palm Sunday call to save rare parrot

Conservationists in Colombia have renewed a campaign to encourage locals not to harvest the Quindio wax palm this Easter.

The Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense)is essential to the survival of the yellow-eared parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis), which is officially listed as Endangered. But, traditionally, thousands of the trees have been used to celebrate Palm Sunday, in this predominantly Catholic country.

Help! Have you seen Archie?

The desperate owner of a missing Bengal eagle owl (Bubo bengalensis) is pleading for locals in the Hebburn and Tyne area of the North East to help find her missing bird.

Stephanie McDowell, from Jutland Avenue, Hebburn, said she's been trying to put the word out via Facebook, but has had to suffer crank calls. Archie, her 12-year-old Bengal eagle owl, was hand-reared from a chick and so has no wild hunting instincts. He went missing on Thursday March 15.

The world's largest bird park, Weltvogelpark Zoo, cele­brates its 50th birthday this year. And to mark the special event, many new attractions are to be unveiled.

Rare dusky lory breeding success

A pair of dusky lories (Pseudeos fuscata) have been hand-reared by the Weltvogelpark zoo in Walsrode, northern Germany. The species, which is indigenous to Indonesia and parts of Papua New Guinea, is extremely difficult to breed in captivity.
